Mondial, is the first biannual magazine from lifestyle cycle brand Rapha, containing long form writing, photography and in-depth reportage all connected to cycling. The company is known for their refined and classic aesthetic, and have extended their sophisticated style to the magazine’s design.
Park’s brief was to contribute to the creativity and tactility, and deliver an eye-catching, high quality magazine that reflected the aesthetic of the Rapha brand, a perfect blend of luxury and performance.
One important aspect of the design, was the black text on pink paper – a direct homage to the front cover of the Gazzetta Della Sport, the Italian newspaper responsible for the creation of the Giro d’Italia in 1909. Famed for its pink paper, the Gazzetta, with its strong connection to the sport of road racing, has always been a big influence on the brand. Rapha wanted to match the colour of the printed pink on the off-white uncoated text, to the colour of the pink cover board material.
To increase the visual impact, a mixture of materials were used: white matt, white gloss, smooth hi-white uncoated, and a coloured stock for the cover. We prepared a number of dummies, each with a different paper combinations so Rapha could choose the mix that best reflected their brand.
To provide a seamless link between the cover board and the printed pink text pages, we devised a machine scatter-proof covering the range of tint percentages of the pink special ink.
A gloss black foil on the cover material, was used to enhance the 'quality feel'.
We applied our unique XD Screening technology to obtain the best vibrancy and lift on images, while simultaneously achieving smooth solids and tints, on both the coated and uncoated stocks.
Our inkjet proofing on a range of materials synthesised the results of the final product and helped Rapha visualise the end result.
Park’s Indigo book proofing highlighted adjustments needed to allow text to read through the spine. Rapha was able to move important images to further improve the quality of the production.
The solid black article headings were printed as 4 colour to obtain a ‘dense black’, and monochrome imagery was neutralised by Park’s repro team ensuring consistent colour.
Plate profiles were applied, developed to achieve the best results on each material. Special hard drying inks for uncoated materials were used and the sheets were printed to ISO 12647-2 (2013) colour standards.
MagCulture’s Jeremy Leslie, comments:
It is a hugely impressive first issue, effortlessly mixing general cycling stories with Rapha-centric articles. The latest in a number of digital businesses to expand into print, the result is an impressive 162 pages of mixed paper stocks, excellent production values, good writing and strong visuals.
